President Mahama faces pressure over lean gov't commitment
President John Dramani Mahama has admitted to facing immense pressure as his administration works to fulfil its pledge to appoint a lean government with only 60 ministers.
Addressing attendees at the Presidential Dinner in Accra on Wednesday, January 8, President Mahama highlighted the high expectations from Ghanaians and the challenge of managing public aspirations alongside effective governance.
“You wouldn’t want to be in my shoes when you’ve promised to appoint only 60 ministers, yet thousands of people are sending in their CVs.
Then, maybe some people will be disappointed,” he remarked.
The President emphasized that while limiting the size of government is a priority, the success of his administration hinges on the collective efforts of all sectors of society, not just ministerial appointments.
“The success of this administration will secure us another term, perhaps under a different leader.
But we must get this right so that Ghanaians can continue to have confidence in us,” he stated.
Drawing lessons from the previous administration, President Mahama urged his government to avoid repeating mistakes that led to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss of public trust.
“There’s no use fighting for political power if we are coming to repeat the same mistakes,” he cautioned.
Despite the challenges, President Mahama reiterated his administration’s commitment to delivering on its promises, fostering trust, and implementing policies that prioritize the needs of Ghanaians.
He concluded by assuring the public that his government remains focused on building a responsive and accountable administration, which will strengthen the confidence of citizens in the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
