Wontumi is not a Galamsey 'kingpin' - Kofi Tonto
Kofi Tonto, Spokesperson for former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has rejected the description of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard "Wontumi" Antwi-Boasiako as a "kingpin" in the illegal mining case for which he was convicted.
Speaking on TV3, Kofi Tonto said the evidence presented did not support that characterisation.
"The evidence shows that Wontumi was not a kingpin. Wontumi was a proper lease owner who gave his land to somebody to engage in an activity or reclamation," he said.
He also argued that Henry Okum, who testified in the case, did not provide evidence to support the prosecution's claims.
"Henry Okum did not provide any evidence," he said.
Mr Tonto further questioned the prosecution's argument that Wontumi should have known Mr Okum was a small-scale miner who would use the concession for mining.
"It's like saying I've given my land to someone to sell food, then the next thing I know the person is building a house on it. Then the logic is that I should have known the person is a contractor or an architect or mason so I should have known they'd build on my land," he said.
"Where's that logic coming from?"
