400 coaches apply for Black Stars job: Sannie Daara backs Attram, Ofei for Somalia games
More than 400 coaches have applied for the vacant Black Stars head coach position, according to former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Ibrahim Sannie Daara.
Ghana are searching for a new head coach following the departure of Portuguese trainer Carlos Queiroz after consecutive defeats in the opening two matches of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Black Stars lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before suffering a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Sannie Daara, who now works as a senior media officer at the Confederation of African Football (CAF), said more than 400 coaches had expressed interest in the position.
“More than 400 coaches have applied for the Black Stars job,” he said.
“Most of the coaches are looking for jobs, and most of them respect Ghana due to how we play. I can confirm that over 400 coaches have applied for the job,” he added.
A five-member committee established by the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation is tasked with recommending a successor to Queiroz.
However, the committee’s mandate has been extended, leading the GFA and the Ministry to confirm that an interim technical team will oversee Ghana’s next two AFCON qualifying matches against Somalia in November.
Sannie Daara has backed former Black Stars assistant coaches Godwin Attram and Desmond Ofei to take charge of the team for the two matches.
“Godwin Attram and Desmond Ofei must be given the opportunity to take charge of the Somalia games and then take time to look for proper coaches who can build a team for the future,” he told Asempa FM.
Ofei previously served as an assistant coach under Otto Addo and Queiroz before being assigned to lead Ghana’s Olympic team, the Black Meteors.
Attram was appointed as Queiroz’s second assistant coach ahead of Ghana’s opening AFCON qualifying matches.
The Black Stars will face Somalia in back-to-back fixtures on matchdays three and four, with both matches scheduled to be played at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Ghana are bottom of Group C without a point after their opening two defeats and are under pressure to revive their qualification campaign.
The four-time African champions are also seeking to return to the continental tournament after missing the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
The GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation are expected to name the interim technical team for the Somalia fixtures while the search for a permanent head coach continues.
