FIFA WC 2026: Laryea Kingston assesses Black Stars' 'tough' Group L opponents, warns against underestimating Panama
Former Black Stars winger Laryea Kingston has described Ghana’s pairing with England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as exciting, noting the strong historical connection between Ghanaian footballers and England.
“It was exciting seeing Ghana paired in the same group with England. We all know England is like a second home for Ghanaians. We usually play our friendly games there. Our game against England will be exciting,” Kingston said.
Despite the buzz surrounding the England fixture, the former international cautioned the Black Stars against underestimating Panama, insisting their presence at the tournament was well-earned.
“Ghana is in a tough group. I will advise the Black Stars not to underestimate Panama. Their qualification to the tournament was not just by fluke,” he stressed.
Kingston also highlighted Croatia as a formidable opponent, praising their technical quality and coaching setup. He revealed a personal connection with the Croatian head coach, Zlatko Dalic, whom he credits as a mentor.
“Croatia is a very good side. They have a very good coach, who is a friend of mine. He is mentoring me. It’s going to be interesting and I’m looking forward to that,” he added.
Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside England, Panama and Croatia for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. With a blend of excitement and caution, Kingston’s remarks reflect the expectations and challenges facing the Black Stars as they prepare for their fifth appearance at the global showpiece, their peak performance being at the 2010 edtion in South Africa.
