FIFA overturns Balogun suspension ahead of USA's World Cup clash with Belgium
FIFA has suspended the automatic one-match ban imposed on United States forward Folarin Balogun, making him available for Monday's FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium.
Balogun was sent off following a VAR review during the United States' Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In a statement, FIFA said its Disciplinary Committee had suspended the automatic suspension under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
"Under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the application of the automatic suspension of American player Folarin Balogun is suspended for a probationary period of one (1) year," the statement said.
The decision means the striker will be eligible to feature against Belgium.
Following the announcement, Donald Trump welcomed the outcome in a post on his Truth Social platform, writing: "Thank you FIFA for doing what is right, and reversing a great injustice!" A screenshot of the post was later shared by the official White House account on X.
Meanwhile, journalist Ben Jacobs reported on X that the White House had contacted FIFA and requested a review of Balogun's dismissal.
According to Jacobs, FIFA referred enquiries to the findings of its independent disciplinary committee and maintained that any communication from the White House did not influence the outcome.
FIFA also insisted that the decision was reached independently by the Disciplinary Committee under the provisions of Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and denied any political interference in the process.
