Football legend Dwight Yorke reaffirms interest in Black Stars coaching job
Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has reaffirmed his interest in becoming head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars, citing the quality of players available to the national team.
Yorke is among the names linked with the vacant position following the departure of Carlos Queiroz after Ghana’s poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars lost their opening Group C matches against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia, leaving Ghana without a point.
Speaking to The Guardian, the Trinidadian and Tobagonian said the quality in Ghana’s squad makes the coaching job attractive.
“It’s a job I’d be interested in, given Ghana’s history and the players available,” he said.
“You look at the squad and your eyes open even wider.”
Yorke specifically pointed to the talent available to Ghana, including Premier League players Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo.
The 54-year-old also revealed that an agent had contacted him about Ghana’s interest in appointing him as head coach.
“The conversation started there and then reached the media before I really knew it,” he said.
Yorke said Ghana has the talent to succeed but would need to build the right culture and commitment within the team.
“The talent is there. Build the culture and get the players to buy in, and the football will follow,” he said.
Yorke previously coached Australian club Macarthur FC, leading the side to the Australia Cup title in 2022. He also took charge of the Trinidad and Tobago national team in November 2024.
His interest comes as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports continue the search for a substantive replacement for Queiroz.
The two bodies have appointed an interim technical team to oversee Ghana’s upcoming AFCON qualifiers against Somalia.
Black Queens coach Kim Lars Björkegren will lead the team, assisted by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram. Former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda will serve as goalkeeper trainer.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Somalia in their next two Group C matches.
The GFA and the Sports Ministry are expected to appoint a substantive head coach in November as Ghana seeks to revive its qualification campaign.
Ghana missed the 2025 AFCON after failing to win any of their qualifying matches.
