The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expects to appoint a substantive head coach for the Black Stars by November 2026, Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has said.

Speaking to Luv FM, Asante Twum said the five-member committee tasked with finding a replacement for former coach Carlos Queiroz is working towards completing the process by November.

“They [the committee] want to get us a coach by November. In terms of actuals, I don’t have [a specific date], but I know by the end of the two games against Somalia, they will be in a position to tell who our coach is,” he said.

The GFA has appointed Black Queens coach Kim Lars Björkegren on an interim basis to lead the Black Stars in their upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Somalia.

Björkegren will be assisted by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, while Fatawu Dauda will retain his role as goalkeepers’ coach. The interim team was recommended by the five-member committee.

Asante Twum said the immediate focus is on improving Ghana’s position in the AFCON qualifiers rather than the search for a permanent coach.

“The two games ahead of us are more important than any other subject. We need to get back on track and must get results in the next matches,” he said.

The Black Stars are bottom of Group C without a point after losing their opening two matches against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia.

Ghana will face Somalia in a double-header in November as they seek to revive their qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars missed the 2025 AFCON in Morocco after finishing bottom of their qualifying group without a win.
