Ghana to host 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship in April 2026
Ghana has been officially confirmed as the host nation for the 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship, scheduled to take place in Accra from April 29 to May 3, 2026.
The announcement was made by the Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), drawing excitement across the continental armwrestling community.
The prestigious championship is expected to attract about 450 armwrestlers from more than 22 African countries, all competing for continental glory in what promises to be an intense display of strength, technique, and resilience.
The decision further reinforces Ghana’s growing reputation as a major centre for armwrestling development in Africa.
Beyond the medals and titles at stake, the 2026 championship carries significant importance as it will serve as the official qualifying event for armwrestling at the 2027 African Games.
Athletes will therefore be battling not only for national pride but also for the limited qualification slots to represent their countries at the Games.
Host nation Ghana, widely known for its formidable “Golden Arms,” will be aiming to defend its dominance on home soil. However, stiff competition is expected from traditional rivals such as Egypt and Nigeria, as well as emerging challengers including Benin and Cameroon, setting the stage for high-stakes and fiercely contested matches.
Speaking on the upcoming event, Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, President of both the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) and the Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), assured stakeholders of a first-class championship.
He noted that Ghana is fully prepared to deliver an exceptional event that reflects the country’s hospitality, organisational strength, and commitment to the growth of armwrestling on the continent.
As preparations begin in earnest, anticipation continues to build across Africa.
With Accra ready to welcome the continent’s strongest pullers, the 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship is set to be a defining moment—crowning new African champions and determining those who will advance to the 2027 African Games.
