Kim Lars Björkegren to lead Black Stars for November Somalia double-header
Kim Lars Björkegren will take charge of the Black Stars for the November international break as Ghana continues its search for a permanent head coach.
The Swedish trainer, who is the head coach of the Black Queens, will lead the senior men's team for their two 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Somalia.
Björkegren will be assisted by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram for the double-header.
The Black Stars are looking for their first win in the qualifying campaign after losing their opening two Group C matches.
Ghana suffered a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before losing 4-2 to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The results led to the mutual termination of Carlos Queiroz’s contract and prompted the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to set up a five-member committee to find his replacement.
The committee, chaired by former GFA vice-president Fred Pappoe, was expected to recommend a new coach by October 15. However, the search has continued following the large number of applications received for the vacant position.
Björkegren is familiar with the Black Stars setup, having previously served as an assistant coach for the team before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He was later left out of the technical team following the departure of Otto Addo and the appointment of Queiroz.
The Swedish coach has since continued his work with the Black Queens.
The Black Stars will face Somalia on November 11 and 15, with both matches scheduled to be played in Ghana.
Björkegren will then return to his duties with the Black Queens as Ghana prepare for the first phase of the 2027 Women's World Cup qualifying playoffs, which are scheduled to begin on November 28.
The arrangement means Björkegren could have just 13 days between the Black Stars' second match against Somalia and the start of the Black Queens' World Cup playoff campaign.
Ghana's immediate focus, however, will be on securing maximum points against Somalia and reviving its AFCON qualifying campaign.
