Kotoko fans storm training, force interim Coach Prince Yaw Owusu to abandon session
Tension is mounting within the Asante Kotoko camp after a group of supporters stormed the club’s training grounds at Adako Jachie and forced interim coach Prince Yaw Owusu to abandon Wednesday’s session.
Owusu, who previously served as assistant to Karim Zito, was appointed by the club’s Interim Management Committee to take temporary charge following Zito’s resignation earlier this week.
He had been scheduled to oversee preparations for Sunday’s crucial Ghana Premier League clash against rivals Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
His appointment, however, has drawn resistance from sections of the Kotoko faithful.
On Wednesday evening, angry supporters reportedly invaded the training grounds, preventing Owusu from conducting training and demanding that he step aside. Eyewitnesses said tensions quickly escalated, forcing the coach to retreat to his vehicle as fans surrounded the area.
Training later resumed under the supervision of Hamza Obeng.
The incident adds to growing uncertainty around Kotoko’s preparations ahead of one of the season’s biggest fixtures.
The Porcupine Warriors currently trail league leaders Medeama SC by eight points and have already exited the MTN FA Cup, leaving their campaign under increasing pressure.
