Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) Speed Stars secured a convincing 6-2 victory over the Black Stars Legends in a lively exhibition match played at the Adjiringanor Astro Turf on Saturday, September 19, 2026.

The friendly brought together UMB employees and a host of former Ghana internationals, giving football fans the chance to watch some of the country’s celebrated former Black Stars players return to the field.

The UMB team, captained by the bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Philip Oti-Mensah controlled large spells of the game and eventually walked away with a comfortable win. The players and officials were presented with trophies and gold medals following the encounter.

The Black Stars Legends were managed by former Ghana international George Alhassan and featured a number of players who represented the national team at different stages of their careers.

Among the former internationals were goalkeepers Sammy Adjei and Fatau Dauda, alongside John Paintsil, Daniel Opare, Jerry Akaminko, Afo Dodoo, Yaw Acheampong, Yaw Preko, Mohammed Gargo, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, Haminu Dramani, Godwin Attram, Kwame Ayew, Prince Tagoe and Abdul Majeed Waris.

Sammy Adjei started between the posts, with Paintsil, Opare, Afo Dodoo, and Akaminko featuring in defense. Gargo and Agyemang-Badu anchored the midfield, while Attram operated in an attacking role. Preko and Dramani provided width, with Kwame Ayew leading the attack.

The UMB Speed Stars also paraded several members of the bank’s staff, including Dennis Nyaku, Kingsley Sesenu, Christian Boakye, Richard Sarfo, Patrick Afrifa, Emmanuel Essien, Adu Francis, Abdul Rahman Musa, Samuel Sackey, Akplome Agbeshie and Christian Boakye Boateng.

Former Black Stars forward Godwin Attram found the back of the net with a well-executed free-kick, but the UMB side remained the more efficient team in front of goal.

UMB forward Ishmael Aryee reportedly scored four times in the opening half as the bankers established a commanding advantage before going on to complete the 6-2 victory.

The match was held under the auspices of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), as part of efforts to deepen ties between the corporate community and Ghana’s football fraternity.

As part of the activities, UMB presented a GH¢30,000 cheque to the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana, reaffirming its support for initiatives aimed at contributing to the development of football in the country.

UMB is an official banking partner of the GFA and is also the headline sponsor of the Ghana Division One League for the next three years.

The friendly provided an opportunity for former Black Stars stars and UMB executives and staff to reconnect through football while also highlighting the bank’s continued involvement in supporting the development of the sport in Ghana.
