GRIDCo restores power after national grid disruption

A nationwide blackout that affected large parts of the country on the evening of Thursday, April 3, has been completely resolved, according to a statement from the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo).
GRIDCo explained that the power outage, which impacted areas including Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, Techiman, Bui, Tumu, Sawla, and various regions in the north of the country, was triggered by a fault on the Tafo-Nkawkaw transmission line at exactly 20:09 hours.
The initial issue caused a ripple effect, resulting in further failures across nearby transmission lines and the shutdown of several power plants.
This sudden dip in power generation led to widespread blackouts, particularly in regions beyond Kumasi. GRIDCo’s System Control Centre responded promptly to the situation, activating emergency procedures to stabilise the national grid.
Power restoration efforts commenced immediately, and by 22:57 hours, the electricity supply had been fully restored across the affected areas.
GRIDCo issued a full apology to the public for the inconvenience caused by the disruption. Dzifa Bampoh, Manager of Corporate Communications at GRIDCo, expressed regret, stating, "The Ghana Grid Company sincerely apologises to the general public for the disruption."
