NIC commissioner rallies insurance stakeholders to support informal sector and youth innovation

Dr. Abiba Zakariah, Acting Commissioner of Insurance at the National Insurance Commission (NIC), has reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to leveraging technology and insurance innovation to support Ghana’s informal sector and youth development.
Speaking at the Demo Day of the Inclusive Insurance Innovation Challenge(3ic), Dr. Zakariah addressed finalists and stakeholders in the insurance industry, urging deeper collaboration to drive inclusive financial solutions for underserved communities.
“Our goal is to empower the youth to use technology in acquiring practical skills that support the informal sector and improve their livelihoods,” she stated.
She noted that the Commission’s efforts began with organised groups within the informal economy, including trade associations, transport operators, and others in the transport industry.
“Welfare remains a primary concern for these groups, and we are determined to address this in the near future,” she added.
Dr. Zakariah emphasised the NIC’s push to encourage young people to adopt insurance solutions, describing the initial uptake of newly developed products as promising.
In alignment with the government’s broader agenda to reset the economy, she identified agriculture as a critical pillar of national growth.
“We are committed to supporting farmers through the development of tailored insurance products, creating funding avenues, and promoting essential services across the agricultural value chain,” she said.
Dr. Zakariah concluded by highlighting a new policy initiative designed to benefit both farmers and consumers, positioning insurance as a key driver of inclusive development and economic resilience.
