President Mahama blames Akufo-Addo administration for $2.5 billion energy sector debt

President John Dramani Mahama has attributed the $2.5 billion debt in Ghana's energy sector to the mismanagement of the Energy Sector Levy by the previous Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration.
Speaking at a meeting with stakeholders in the power sector in Accra, President Mahama criticized the former government for failing to properly utilize the levy to address the sector’s financial challenges, alleging that the funds were misapplied.
During his second engagement with energy sector leaders within a week, the President emphasized the urgent need for reforms to strengthen the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
He advocated for increased private sector participation in ECG operations as a solution to reduce technical losses and enhance efficiency in service delivery.
“We must ensure the Electricity Company of Ghana becomes more efficient by leveraging private sector expertise.
This will not only minimize technical losses but also improve overall performance,” President Mahama stated.
The meeting forms part of ongoing efforts by the Mahama administration to address Ghana's energy sector challenges and restore financial sustainability.
