World-renowned Italian designer and billionaire entrepreneur Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91.

A trailblazer in global fashion, Armani was celebrated as the embodiment of Italian elegance, redefining modern tailoring for both men and women.

From his beginnings in haute couture, Armani built a vast lifestyle empire that spanned fashion, beauty, fragrances, sports, music, and even luxury hotels.

His company, still independently owned, generates more than £2 billion annually.

On Armani’s official Instagram page, his company described him as “indefatigable to the end” and said he worked tirelessly until his final days, always driven by “relentless curiosity and a deep attention to the present and to people.”

Hollywood and fashion icons also remembered him with affection.

Actor Russell Crowe called Armani a man who “made a mark acknowledged around the globe,” recalling how the designer supported him during many significant life moments.

Actress Julia Roberts shared a photo with Armani, writing simply: “A true friend.

A legend” with a heartbreak emoji.

British designer Paul Smith praised Armani’s independence and influence: “His continuity, his down-to-earth nature and his staying power in remaining as an unlisted, independent company have always been a huge inspiration.

He has been an enormous source of strength and creativity for many years.”

Armani was regarded as a pioneer in several respects.

He elevated red-carpet fashion into the spectacle it is today and was one of the first major designers to take a stand against unhealthy body standards.

Following the death of Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston in 2006, he became the first to ban underweight models from his runway shows.

Tributes also came from Italian leaders. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hailed him as “an icon, a tireless worker, a symbol of the best of Italy.” She added: “With his elegance, sobriety, and creativity, he was able to bring lustre to Italian fashion and inspire the entire world.

Thank you for everything.”
