The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has assured that repair work on the section of the Kumasi Kejetia Market that was destroyed during a fire outbreak will be fixed.

While touring the Kumasi Kejetia Market and the Central Market Redevelopment Project today, Tuesday, February 11, 2025, the minister hinted at a meeting to be held with market stakeholders over a date for the commencement of the repair work.

He revealed the contractor had confirmed the damaged section of the market could be fixed within two weeks.

About 54 shops were damaged in the market on March 15, 2023, but repair has not yet been done. Subsequently, on January 24, 2025, two shops were destroyed and have since remained unfixed.

Affected traders have appealed for repairs to enable them to return to their businesses.

Dr Amoakohene reassured the affected traders that they would not lose their shops after the repairs had been completed, allaying fears.

He expressed concern about the unsanitary conditions in the market, particularly the toilet facilities and noted the congested nature of some areas in the market, also.

Dr Amoakohene urged traders occupying the firefighting installation points to move out so firefighters could have access in case of emergencies.

He directed that drivers who had turned the front view of the market into lorry terminals be moved to enable easy access to the market in case of emergencies.

The minister also expressed satisfaction with the progress of work done on the Kumasi Central Market Redevelopment project, urging work be sped up a little to enable early completion.
