Ace broadcast journalist and editor at Adom FM, Akwasi Agyeman, has officially announced his candidacy for the position of National Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), ahead of the Association’s elections scheduled for June 30, 2025.

With over 20 years of experience in journalism across Ghana and the continent, Mr. Agyeman brings to the race a distinguished track record in media leadership, press freedom advocacy, and journalist welfare.

He will appear as number two on the ballot paper, facing competition from the current GJA Organising Secretary, Dominic Hlordzi.

Announcing his bid, Mr. Agyeman stated: “I am standing for this role not just as a journalist, but as someone who understands the challenges of the profession and is ready to help reposition the GJA as a proactive, supportive, and unifying force for all media professionals.”

His career spans decades of work with the Multimedia Group, where he has risen through the ranks to become one of Adom FM’s most respected editors.

Beyond the newsroom, he has represented Ghana’s media on numerous international platforms, serving as an election observer in Togo, Nigeria, and Liberia—highlighting the critical role of journalism in democratic governance.

Mr. Agyeman also has a strong academic background.

He currently lectures at the University of Media, Arts and Communication – Institute of Journalism (UniMAC-IJ) and is pursuing a PhD at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana.

His doctoral research focuses on “The Dynamics of Rejected Ballots in Africa,” exploring electoral trends from 1992 to 2020.

A committed member of the GJA since 2007, Mr. Agyeman has contributed significantly to the Association’s work, including three consecutive terms on the GJA Awards Committee under the leadership of the late Dr. Doris Dartey and Mrs. Betty Apau-Oppong.

He also led journalist safety and communication training programmes between 2018 and 2020, aimed at equipping practitioners to navigate high-risk reporting environments.

Outlining his vision, Mr. Agyeman pledged to strengthen the internal structures of the GJA, enhance regional engagement, and expand professional development opportunities for members nationwide.

“The GJA must be a vibrant, inclusive, and future-ready association,” he said. “I am committed to making that a reality.”
