Pressure group Arise Ghana on Tuesday picketed the United States Embassy in Cantonments, Accra, demanding the return of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to Ghana to answer questions over alleged financial mismanagement.

Clad in red and black attire, demonstrators gathered outside the embassy premises, wielding placards bearing inscriptions such as “Bring Ken Home” and “No Hiding Place for Corruption.”

The protest comes at a time when the former finance minister remains outside the country amid ongoing investigations by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) into a number of high-profile transactions approved during his tenure.

Ken Ofori-Atta served as Ghana’s Finance Minister from 2017 to 2024 under the New Patriotic Party (NPP)administration led by his cousin, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Over the years, he has been at the centre of sustained public controversy, particularly over allegations of financial mismanagement and procurement-related irregularities.

The OSP has announced investigations into several transactions linked to his period in office, including revenue assurance contracts, aspects of the public debt restructuring programme, and payments made under sole-sourcing arrangements.

Lawyers for the former minister have previously stated that he is willing to cooperate with any lawful investigative process, explaining that his absence from Ghana is due to health and security concerns.

Meanwhile, reports have recently emerged suggesting that Mr Ofori-Atta was briefly detained by U.S. immigration authorities, a development that has further intensified public debate and calls for his return to Ghana.
