Foreign Affairs Minister engages Igbo leader over creation of 'Igbo Kingdom' in Ghana

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, has held a meeting with Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, the Igbo leader in Ghana, following recent controversy surrounding alleged plans to establish an “Igbo Kingdom” in the country.
The meeting, held on Wednesday, was aimed at clarifying viral statements and addressing public concerns that have sparked widespread debate across the nation.
During the engagement, Eze Ihenetu explained that the claims stemmed from a video clip of an old interview recorded in 2013 — a moment in time he now deeply regrets.
He clarified that he had since abandoned any such idea and affirmed that no land had been acquired for the alleged purpose.
The Igbo leader expressed his “profuse apologies” to the President of Ghana, the Government, traditional authorities, and the Ghanaian people for the “unfortunate agitations” caused by what he described as an “ill-advised interview.”
Minister Ablakwa reiterated Ghana’s longstanding commitment to a friendly and inclusive foreign policy, particularly toward fellow Africans and members of the African diaspora.
He emphasised the importance of safeguarding Ghana’s peaceful traditions, urging all residents and visitors to refrain from conduct or statements deemed unlawful, divisive, or provocative.
“Ghana remains proud of its Pan-African identity and will continue to offer hospitality to all,” the Minister said.
“However, our peace and unity must not be compromised.”
He further called for calm and restraint in public discourse, highlighting the strong and historic ties between Ghana and Nigeria.
Mr Ablakwa cautioned against commentary that could inflame tensions or result in xenophobic backlash.
