GFL urges MMDCEs to step up their game amid worsening water shortages
The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Mr. Abraham Koomson, has called on Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to take decisive action in addressing the growing challenges facing residents in their jurisdictions, particularly the acute water shortage in Tema and surrounding areas.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s “Yepe Ahunu” programme on Saturday, Mr. Koomson expressed deep concern over the deteriorating supply of basic amenities, urging local authorities to demonstrate leadership and accountability.
“The water situation has become dire, especially in Communities 4, 5, and other areas.
The MMDCEs must investigate the cause of the problem and communicate with the people. You can’t keep us in darkness,” he said.
Mr. Koomson also lamented the low public participation in the recent National Sanitation Day exercise, attributing the poor turnout to inadequate mobilisation and weak leadership from the MMDCEs.
“The poor participation in the sanitation exercise shows that many MMDCEs are not doing enough.
They must do more to encourage citizens to volunteer and keep their environments clean,” he added.
The labour leader urged President John Dramani Mahama to take a firm stance by replacing underperforming DCEs and MCEs with more proactive and results-oriented individuals capable of driving real community impact.
He further appealed to the Ghana Water Limited (GWL) to urgently resolve the technical challenges responsible for the water shortages in Tema and nearby communities, warning that the situation is rapidly becoming unbearable for residents.
“Water is a basic necessity. The authorities must act quickly before the situation worsens,” Mr. Koomson emphasised.
