GJA seeks probe after reported assault on Peace FM journalist
The Eastern Regional Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called on law enforcement authorities to urgently investigate the reported assault of Peace FM’s Eastern Regional Correspondent, Michael Akrofi, allegedly carried out by a police officer at the Tafo–Kukurantumi Formed Police Unit (FPU) station.
The incident is said to have occurred while Mr. Akrofi was legitimately reporting on a farmers’ demonstration in Kukurantumi, Eastern Region, which was organized to draw attention to the destruction of farmlands by Fulani herdsmen and their livestock.
In a statement released on Monday, January 12, and signed by Stephen Ampem Darko Koranteng, Chairman of the Eastern Regional GJA, the Association claimed that the journalist was attacked from behind, strangled three times by the officer, and subsequently threatened.
As a result of the alleged attack, Mr. Akrofi reportedly experienced pain in his neck, back, and waist, prompting him to seek medical care.
The Association said the matter has been formally reported to the Eastern Regional Police Command, but as of the statement’s release, no official response or update had been provided.
Condemning the act as “brutal and unprofessional,” the GJA emphasized that such incidents undermine press freedom and violate journalists’ constitutional right to work without fear, intimidation, or harassment.
The Association also highlighted the importance of stronger cooperation and understanding between the media and security personnel, especially during public protests and other tense situations. According to the GJA, mutual respect, clarity of roles, and adherence to professional standards are essential to maintaining order while protecting democratic freedoms.
The GJA urged the Inspector-General of Police and the Eastern Regional Police Command to swiftly investigate the case, identify the officer involved, and take appropriate legal action.
“The GJA stands firmly with journalists affected by such incidents and will continue to advocate for their protection and rights. We will monitor this case closely and take all necessary measures to ensure justice is delivered,” the statement concluded.
