Deputy Minister for Energy, Richard Gyan-Mensah, has announced that Kumasi and its surrounding communities will soon receive an additional 47 megawatts of electricity as part of government efforts to stabilise power supply in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking during an inspection visit to the Asomase power plant, the Deputy Minister said the government was on site to assess the progress of ongoing works, and early indications show that the project is on course for timely delivery.

According to him, reports from engineers indicate that by next week, all units at the plant will be fully energised.

He revealed that the first 47-megawatt unit is expected to be connected to the national grid by this afternoon, following the successful energising of transformers, control room systems, and related infrastructure.

“By this afternoon, Kumasi will enjoy additional megawatts of power,” he said, adding that the broader plan is to bring a minimum of 120 megawatts on board by the close of next week.

Mr. Gyan-Mensah explained that the plant has three units, which are being operated at a time to ensure proper testing and safe integration into the grid.

This phased approach, he noted, is to guarantee efficiency and long-term stability.

He used the opportunity to commend residents of Kumasi and its environs for their patience, acknowledging that some parts of the city experienced temporary power interruptions over the past few days due to the ongoing works.

“At certain stages of the project, power had to be briefly taken off to allow engineers to complete critical connections.

These inconveniences are necessary so that Kumasi can enjoy the improved and stable power supply it deserves,” he explained.

The Deputy Minister further assured the public that Ghana currently has adequate power generation capacity to meet demand, even though consumption continues to rise.

He stressed that the government is deliberately bringing additional plants on board to prevent demand from overtaking supply.

“We don’t want to sit and wait for demand to exceed supply.

That is why we are consistently adding new generation capacity,” he said.

Mr. Gyan-Mensah praised the efforts of the AKSA team and GRIDCo, commending them for their dedication and commitment to delivering the project ahead of schedule, despite initial projections that it would be completed by the end of the year.

He expressed optimism that at least 120 megawatts—and possibly more—will be available by next week, noting that the government is targeting even higher output if conditions permit.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, he stated, “We want to assure Ghanaians that this government is determined to ensure that every home, every industry, and every sector that depends on electricity will receive reliable power.”

With the festive season approaching, he added that the government has engaged ECG and other power sector agencies to ensure a stable supply, stressing that any planned outages must be properly communicated to the public.

Finally, he emphasised the need to protect government energy assets, describing them as critical to national development and economic growth.
