NIA engages Ghana Association of Banks on use of identity system security

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has held a high-level strategic meeting with the Ghana Association of Banks (GAB) to strengthen collaboration on identity security and tackle emerging threats to the country’s identification system.
The meeting, held at the GAB Conference Room in Accra, brought together leadership from the NIA’s key directorates and top officials of GAB.
The discussions centred on the operations of the Identity Verification System Platform (IVSP), which facilitates biometric identity authentication in financial transactions.
A major concern raised during the engagement was the growing threat of illegal Ghana Card registrations by foreign nationals.
Both parties expressed concern about the implications of such activities on national security, financial integrity, and public trust in the identification system.
The NIA emphasised the need for closer cooperation with the banking sector to prevent fraudulent access to identity credentials and to bolster efforts in protecting the Ghana Card ecosystem.
In a joint resolution, the NIA and GAB reaffirmed their commitment to working together to enhance verification protocols, promote data integrity, and safeguard the country’s identity infrastructure as a critical pillar of national development.
