NLC Summons judicial service, finance ministry over JUSAG salary arrears
The National Labour Commission (NLC) has summoned the Judicial Service and the Ministry of Finance over a disagreement with the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) concerning outstanding salary payments.
In a statement dated January 14, 2026, and endorsed by the Commission’s Acting Executive Secretary, Dr. Bernice A. Welbeck, the NLC disclosed that it received a formal notice from JUSAG on January 13, 2026, indicating plans for possible industrial action. The notice, issued a day earlier, expressed the association’s frustration over delays in settling eight months of unpaid salaries covering the period from January to August 2025.
The continued non-payment of these arrears led JUSAG to warn of strike action should the issue remain unresolved. In response, the NLC has directed the Judicial Secretary and the Ministry of Finance to submit an update on the status of the unpaid salaries within three working days after receiving the Commission’s letter.
Invoking the provisions of Section 139 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), the Commission has fixed a meeting for all concerned parties on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. The NLC has also urged JUSAG to halt any intended strike and engage fully with the Commission’s mediation process by participating in the scheduled session, which seeks to settle the matter peacefully and maintain workplace stability within the Judicial Service.
