President Mahama assures continued Ghana-Grenada rapprochement

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated Ghana’s commitment to deepening ties with Grenada and the wider Caribbean, highlighting shared values and mutual interests as the foundation for stronger cooperation in politics, trade, culture, and education.
Speaking during a meeting with Grenada’s Prime Minister, Dickon Mitchell, in Accra, President Mahama described Ghana’s engagement with the Caribbean as a vital aspect of the country’s foreign policy.
“Last year, I couldn’t attend the African-Caribbean Investment Forum because I had just been elected and was busy forming my government. However, we ensured high-level representation at the event,” he said.
“Your visit gives us an opportunity to continue the rapprochement we have been building, especially through the Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) we’ve signed.”
He commended the progress made under the MOU on political consultations, noting that the recent meeting between the two foreign ministers marked a positive step toward adopting common positions at international forums.
President Mahama also emphasised the importance of MOUs covering trade, culture, and education, expressing optimism that Prime Minister Mitchell’s visit would help deepen cooperation in these key areas.
Touching on the visa waiver agreement between Ghana and Grenada, the president acknowledged minor challenges in its implementation but assured that Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs was working to address them.
“We want to ensure that citizens of both countries — whether holding diplomatic, service, or ordinary passports — can travel freely between Ghana and Grenada,” President Mahama stated.
