GRA probes alleged extortion by Customs task force in Ashanti Region
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has initiated investigations into allegations of extortion involving some officers of its Customs Division task force operating in the Ashanti Region.
The move follows complaints by the Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG), which accused certain Customs officers of demanding unauthorised payments from importers after intercepting goods en route to Kumasi.
According to TAGG, the officers allegedly cited undervaluation as grounds for requesting additional payments, claims that the affected importer reportedly disputed as unjustified.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the GRA said it is treating the allegations with utmost seriousness and has already begun an internal probe to establish the facts.
The Authority assured stakeholders that the investigation will be thorough and that the public will be informed once it is concluded.
“GRA remains committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity among its staff and transparency in its operations to ensure accountability and fairness,” the statement emphasised.
The Authority also encouraged traders, importers, and members of the public to support ongoing efforts to combat malpractice by reporting suspicious activities through its established channels.
