Police arrest 53-year-old man for threat of death and illegal possession of firearm

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 53-year-old man for allegedly threatening an investigator with a firearm and unlawfully possessing a weapon and ammunition.

The suspect, identified as Seth Welbeck, was apprehended on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, on charges of threat of death and possession of firearms and ammunition without lawful authority.

According to a press release issued by the Regional Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service, the arrest followed an earlier forgery case in which Welbeck had been served with a criminal summons to appear before the Accra Circuit Court.

Police said that after court proceedings, while being escorted to the court cells, the suspect requested permission from the investigator to lock his vehicle. However, during the process, he allegedly retrieved a Smith & Wesson SD9 VE pistol loaded with nine rounds of 9mm ammunition from the vehicle and pointed it at the investigator, threatening him.

With the assistance of court officials and witnesses, the investigator swiftly overpowered and disarmed the suspect before any harm could occur.

Welbeck is currently in police custody assisting with investigations and is expected to be arraigned before court.

The Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned the public against acts of violence, threats, or unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, warning that such actions endanger lives and property.

The Command further urged citizens to comply strictly with lawful court processes and police procedures, stressing that any attempt to obstruct justice, intimidate public officers, or resort to violence will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
