MP Agbana condemns dehumanising content in JHS Social Studies textbooks

Eric Edem Agbana, Member of Parliament and member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, has raised serious concerns over content in the Aki-Ola Series Social Studies Textbook for Junior High School students, describing it as disturbing, false, and dehumanising.

The textbook reportedly contains passages and images that outline the “benefits Ghana has derived from colonization,” a narrative that Agbana strongly condemned.

He described the attempt to portray colonization as beneficial as deeply irresponsible, especially at a time when President John Dramani Mahama is championing continental efforts toward reparations.

“Colonization was inhuman. It was a systematic violation of human rights, dignity, and identity. Its effects have left troubling scars on the identities of Africans and Ghanaians,” Agbana stated, emphasising that distorted narratives should not shape the minds of children, to whom educators owe a duty to ensure learning advances both societal progress and individual dignity.

Agbana announced that he will formally petition the Ghana Education Service to review and recall the textbooks, ensuring that harmful perspectives glorifying colonization are removed from the curriculum.

He stressed that Ghana’s education system must reflect truth, justice, and historical integrity, offering a perspective of history that neither denies the past, misstates the present, nor undermines the hopeful future of Ghanaian children.

The MP concluded that educational materials must respect the dignity and identity of students while accurately portraying Ghana’s historical experiences.
