Allied Health Professions Council engages GTEC over use of ‘Dr’ title

The Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) says it has initiated discussions with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) following the commission’s recent directive on the use of the prefix “Dr.”
In a notice dated August 8, 2025, GTEC addressed concerns regarding the use of the title, sparking debate among professionals in the health and education sectors.
Responding to the development in a statement signed by Dr. Shirazu Issahaku, Acting Registrar of the AHPC, the Council said it has formally engaged GTEC and will continue to do so to safeguard the professional identity of allied health practitioners.
The AHPC has also proposed a stakeholder engagement involving GTEC and other relevant bodies to examine the matter thoroughly and arrive at a fair resolution that reflects the role of allied health professionals in Ghana’s healthcare system.
The Council urged practitioners to remain committed to their duties while assuring them that steps are being taken to protect the integrity of their qualifications and the recognition they deserve.
“The AHPC remains committed to protecting the interests of allied health professionals and will keep them informed as discussions progress,” the statement said.
