Commuters decry overcharging as drivers demand GHS15–17 for Nungua route despite mayor’s warning
Some commuters in Accra have raised concerns over continued fare hikes by commercial drivers, despite a recent directive by the Mayor of Accra to arrest and prosecute drivers who overcharge passengers.
According to reports, drivers operating from Tema Station to Nungua and surrounding communities are charging between GHS15 and GHS17 during the evening rush hours, although the approved fare was GHS6.
The situation is said to be most severe around 5 pm, when there was a noticeable shortage of vehicles at the station. The lack of available transport leaves many passengers stranded, creating an opportunity for some drivers to demand unapproved fares.
Commuters describe the practice as exploitative and are calling on the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to intensify enforcement to ensure compliance with approved fares.
Many say the mayor’s earlier promise to crack down on the practice has not yet resulted in visible change on the ground.
Public transport users, especially workers and students who rely heavily on trotro services, have appealed to the AMA to collaborate with transport unions and increase monitoring at major terminals to prevent further exploitation.
So far, the AMA has not issued an update on enforcement efforts regarding the matter.
