GJA launches 3rd media capacity enhancement programme, urges embrace of digital tools
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has launched the third cohort of its Media Capacity Enhancement Programme, aiming to equip journalists and media professionals with essential skills in the evolving media landscape.
Speaking at the programme's opening on Tuesday, 10 September 2024, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour emphasised the importance of adapting to new digital tools and platforms.
“In today’s fast-paced media environment, accuracy and reliability are essential to maintain public trust. Journalists who receive proper training can better engage with their audience and produce trustworthy content,” Mr. Dwumfour stated.
The initiative, first launched in Kumasi with the support of former Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and under the patronage of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, continues to gain momentum with the backing of current Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar.
Mr. Dwumfour praised Ms. Abubakar’s dedication to sustaining the programme, highlighting the Ministry’s and Government’s commitment to strengthening media freedom and improving media capabilities.
Mr. Dwumfour also underscored the need for media professionals to stay updated with new technologies, including artificial intelligence, to thrive in the digital age. He stressed that capacity-building programmes are vital for preparing media organisations for the future, reinforcing ethics, balanced reporting, fairness, and professionalism.
In his concluding remarks, Mr. Dwumfour urged corporate entities to support the programme’s expansion and foster collaboration among media professionals. He also highlighted GJA’s partnership with the U.S. Embassy, which trained 152 journalists under the Peaceful Journalistic Discourse Programme in preparation for the 2024 elections.
This programme aims to enhance media professionalism and public trust in the ever-evolving field of journalism.
