Ghana has made history by assuming the Chairmanship of the Global Action Against Mass Atrocity Crimes (GAAMAC), becoming the first country outside Europe to lead the organisation.

The leadership mantle was officially handed over by Switzerland at a ceremony in Accra.

Speaking at the event, Minister for Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak pledged Ghana’s full support to GAAMAC’s mission of preventing genocide, ethnic cleansing, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.

He emphasised the need to strengthen early warning systems, combat hate speech, promote accountability, and build inclusive societies to minimise the risk of mass atrocities.

Dr. George Amoh, Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council, was officially confirmed as GAAMAC Chairman.

The Minister reaffirmed President John Mahama’s commitment to providing him with the necessary support to succeed in his new role.

Switzerland’s Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Simone Giger, welcomed the transition, describing Ghana’s assumption of the Secretariat as a reflection of the country’s strong peacekeeping track record and dedication to peaceful coexistence.

The milestone is expected to enhance Ghana’s global reputation as a leader in peacebuilding and atrocity prevention.
