Labour Minister pledges stronger protections for public sector workers after Ridge Hospital incident

The Minister for Labour and Employment, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, has assured Ghanaians that the government is rolling out comprehensive measures to safeguard workers, particularly those in public institutions who frequently interact with the public.
His remarks came during the third sitting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), where Committee Chairperson Abena Asare raised concerns about workplace safety following the recent assault of a nurse at Ridge Hospital.
Dr. Pelpuo emphasised that the Ministry remains committed to ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, adding that the Labour Commission will take the lead in addressing such incidents.
“The Labour Commission has been tasked to strengthen its capacity and establish regional offices across the country.
This will enable closer monitoring of workplace conditions and ensure faster responses to such incidents when they occur,” he said.
The Minister further revealed that his Ministry is reviewing safety protocols and enforcement mechanisms to prevent violence against public sector workers and to guarantee better protection for staff while on duty.
Members of PAC welcomed the Minister’s commitment, stressing the importance of worker protection across all sectors.
Dr. Pelpuo assured that the Ministry would collaborate with relevant state agencies to create safer workplaces and curb violence against employees nationwide.
