Cholera kills 2 in Ada, 43 cases reported
A cholera outbreak in the Ada enclave has claimed the lives of two individuals, with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) reporting a total of 43 confirmed cases.
The outbreak has affected both the Ada East and Ada West districts in the Greater Accra Region, prompting health authorities to implement urgent measures to contain the situation and avert further fatalities.
Dr. Frank Bekoe, the Director of Public Health at the GHS, provided an update on the concerning situation, stating: “So we have 37 confirmed cases from Ada East, and then six confirmed cases in Ada West. For us, we are looking at mortalities. I think that since the outbreak started, we have had two mortalities.”
Highlighting the critical need for early detection and effective contact tracing, Dr. Bekoe emphasised, “What we are doing is that we are trying to make sure that we identify the cases quite early and identify the contacts and follow them up, and that is what we have been doing in our circumstances.”
Cholera, caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacteria, spreads through contaminated food and water, often thriving in areas with inadequate sanitation and limited access to clean drinking water.
Symptoms include severe diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration, which can rapidly lead to death if not treated immediately.
