Ranking Member on Health urges gov't to respect nurses and resolve strike

The ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has drawn sharp criticism from Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Health Committee, who is calling on the government to adopt a more constructive approach to resolving the impasse.

Speaking to the press, Dr. Afriyie laid blame on both the National Labour Commission (NLC) and the Ministry of Finance for their delayed response to the GRNMA’s formal notice of industrial action.

According to him, the lack of timely engagement from the authorities has led to the escalation of the situation.

The strike, which commenced on June 9, 2025, is in demand for the full implementation of the 2024 Collective Agreement.

The nurses are pushing for better salaries, allowances, and improved working conditions—terms they say have been unduly postponed.

Dr. Afriyie criticised the government's decision to defer the implementation of the nurses’ new Conditions of Service until 2026, describing it as unfair and unacceptable.
“These nurses have been reasonable for months.

Show them some respect,” he said, questioning why the Minister of Finance has not engaged with the Association in over six months to follow up on negotiations started under the previous administration.

He stressed the need for the government to treat nurses with dignity and engage in sincere, results-driven dialogue.
“We cannot continue to take our health professionals for granted.

The government must change its posture and prioritise meaningful negotiations,” he added.
