CSOs commend President Mahama for historic visit to Bawku
The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Against Political Vigilantism and Violence Extremism has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his swift and decisive action in prioritizing peace and unity in Ghana, particularly in the conflict-prone town of Bawku.
In a congratulatory message, the Coalition lauded President Mahama’s visit to Bawku, describing it as a "historic gesture of leadership and dedication" just one week into his presidency.
The visit, they noted, reaffirms his commitment to resolving one of Ghana’s most complex and longstanding conflicts.
“This proactive step has not only inspired hope among the people of Bawku but has also strengthened the nation’s trust in President Mahama’s leadership to restore harmony and ensure lasting peace,” the statement said.
The Coalition recalled that during the tenure of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, they had urged him to personally intervene in the Bawku conflict, a call they made public through the Insight Newspaper on March 3, 2023.
However, they expressed regret that the plea did not yield the desired response before his exit from office.
“President Mahama’s prioritization of this matter sets a positive precedent for addressing such critical national issues with urgency and intentionality,” the Coalition emphasized.
The group further pledged its unwavering support for the Mahama administration in fostering peace and development in Bawku and beyond.
They also called on key stakeholders—including traditional authorities, security services, the media, and Civil Society Groups—to rally behind the President in his efforts to restore lasting peace.
“We applaud your swift and purposeful leadership and remain optimistic that your commitment will bring a lasting resolution to the Bawku conflict,” the statement concluded.
The message was jointly signed by Eben Kwaku Fenuku, Chairman of the Coalition, and Alimatu Isahak, Executive Secretary.
