Delay in bridge construction frustrates Upper West Akim MP

The Member of Parliament for Upper West Akim Constituency in the Eastern Region, Mr. Emmanuel Drah, has expressed grave concern over the continued delay in the construction of a proper bridge to replace a broken wooden structure currently being used by residents in his constituency.

His deep frustration over the delay in the construction of the bridge in his constituency has left him stressed, despite assurances from government authorities that the project would be executed.

Speaking in an interview on Accra 100.5 FM’s The Citizen Show with Dr. Desmond Annan, Mr Drah said he had hoped the issue would have been fully resolved through direct recommendations and intervention from the President, but nothing concrete has happened so far.

According to the MP, the situation has become increasingly difficult for him politically and personally, especially when he visits the affected community.

“I went to a programme in the community, and it was not easy. As I was going, I kept wondering how the people would welcome me.

They keep saying, ‘You are the one we voted for. You said the President and the authorities have sent you,’” he stated.

Mr. Drah noted that residents are growing impatient, as they were made to believe that government intervention was imminent.

He said returning to the community without visible progress has been challenging.

The MP revealed that he has followed up on the matter for nearly a year, engaging the sector minister several times, but the promised action has yet to materialise.

“I have spoken to the Minister several times, and he keeps saying it will be done.

I have followed it up till now, but nothing has happened,” he said.

He further disclosed that significant preparatory work has already been completed.

According to him, feasibility and cost estimates for the bridge have been done by the Department of Feeder Roads, and relevant documents have been processed at both departmental and ministerial levels.

“I have personally seen documents showing that the estimates for the bridge have been completed and forwarded to the ministries.

The ministries have also worked on it, but the contractor has still not come to the site,” Mr. Drah added.

The MP called for urgent action, stressing that the delay continues to affect the daily lives and safety of residents in the area.

He emphasised that the people of Upper West Akim deserve timely delivery of development projects promised to them and appealed to the relevant authorities to ensure the contractor mobilises to the site without further delay.
