GA/R: Weija-Gbawe MP raises alarm over prolonged power outages in constituency

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe in the Greater Accra Region, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has issued a strong appeal to Ghana’s power authorities to urgently address persistent and unannounced power outages that continue to disrupt lives and businesses in the constituency.
In a statement released on Thursday, April 17, 2025, the MP described the electricity situation in Weija-Gbawe as dire, warning that the outages have plunged homes, clinics, and small businesses into darkness, leaving families distressed and essential services compromised.
“I wish to bring to the urgent attention of relevant authorities the persistent and unannounced power outages (dumsor) that have plagued our constituency over the past few months,” Mr. Shaib stated.
He criticised the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) for failing to communicate planned maintenance or disruptions, leading to severe inconvenience across the constituency.
“These unplanned outages occur without prior notice or communication from ECG or GRIDCo, causing widespread disruption to households, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and businesses,” the MP noted.
“The consequences are dire, hampering economic activity, endangering lives and compromising the delivery of essential services.”
Mr. Shaib emphasised that while the ongoing power crisis is a national issue, the Weija-Gbawe constituency appears to be one of the hardest hit.
According to him, some communities have experienced continuous power cuts lasting over four days.
“Despite several engagements with ECG officials aimed at resolving this crisis, there has been no meaningful progress.
While we have received assurances of GRIDCo’s intervention, residents of Weija-Gbawe continue to endure the burden of unreliable electricity supply,” he added.
The MP concluded his statement with a direct call on the Ministry of Energy, GRIDCo, and ECG to take immediate and lasting action.
“We therefore make a respectful but firm appeal to ECG, GRIDCo, and the Ministry of Energy to take immediate and decisive action to permanently address this issue.
The people of Weija-Gbawe deserve better.”
