Hopeson Adorye backs petition for removal of EC chairperson
The Head of Operations for the Movement for Change, Hopeson Adorye, has declared his full support for the petition submitted to President John Dramani Mahama seeking the removal of Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa and her two deputies.
Speaking on Accra-based CTV’s OMAN GHANA NKOSUO morning show, hosted by Yaa Titi Okrah, Adorye endorsed the petition, which Ofosu-Appiah Daniel filed on Monday, January 27, 2025.
The petition accuses the EC leadership of constitutional violations, incompetence, bias, and actions that have undermined public confidence in the electoral process.
The petition also calls for the removal of:
Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Affairs Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations Dr. Peter Appiahene, a member of the Commission’s boardCiting Article 146 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, the petition alleges gross misconduct, human rights violations, and incompetence on the part of the EC Chair and her two deputies.
Adorye asserted that these allegations are valid, arguing that Jean Mensa has demonstrated unprofessionalism in managing the electoral process.
He claimed that her handling of the 2024 elections could have led to instability if former Vice President Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia had not conceded early defeat.
“The incident at Ablekuma North is a clear indication of the EC Chairperson’s affiliation with the NPP.
The results were collated and declared at the district collation centre, which is the accepted procedure.
Yet, her actions at Ablekuma North disrupted the process, interfering with government business,” Adorye stated.
He urged President Mahama to appoint a neutral, non-partisan individual to lead the EC, emphasizing that an independent Chairperson is essential for free and fair elections in Ghana.
