ICE cleared Ken Ofori-Atta as medically fit before detention – Victor Smith
Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, has disclosed that the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta was medically fit to be held in detention prior to his admission.
Speaking on Accra-based Joy News on Monday, Mr. Smith said ICE arranged for medical personnel to assess Mr. Ofori-Atta shortly after his arrest to determine whether his health condition permitted detention.
According to the Ambassador, ICE officials were satisfied with the medical assessment and concluded that the former Minister was fit to remain in a detention facility.
“Yes, the ICE people confirm that he was all right.
Initially, they had medical people to determine whether he was fit to be held in the detention centre, and they were convinced and assured that he was okay,” Mr. Smith stated.
He further explained that while Mr. Ofori-Atta was on medication at the time, he was not under the active care of a doctor and had access to his prescribed medication during detention.
“He was on medication, but he wasn’t seeing any doctor at the time, and he had his medication, so he could be put in the detention centre,” Mr. Smith added.
The comments come amid public interest in the circumstances surrounding Mr. Ofori-Atta’s detention and his health status while in ICE custody. Add a headline
