Minority Caucus criticises Foreign Minister over his handling of Washington embassy scandal

The Minority Caucus on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee has expressed strong reservations about the Foreign Minister's communication strategy surrounding the recent closure of Ghana’s embassy in Washington, D.C.
Speaking on behalf of the Caucus, former Lands Minister and committee spokesperson, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, clarified that their concern is not solely about the decision to shut down the embassy, but rather the manner and timing in which the information was disclosed to the public.
According to the Minority, the Foreign Minister failed to consult or engage the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs before making a public announcement, a move they described as premature and potentially damaging to Ghana’s diplomatic image.
“The announcement should have been handled with greater tact and diplomacy,” Jinapor noted, emphasising that sensitive foreign policy decisions require measured communication and institutional collaboration, not unilateral declarations.
The Minority Caucus is therefore calling for closer coordination between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Parliament, especially on matters with significant international implications.
They cautioned against what they described as “populist grandstanding” and urged the Foreign Minister to prioritise strategic engagement over headline-driven governance.
