Minority returns to Parliament despite earlier boycott threat

Despite an earlier declaration to boycott parliamentary proceedings until the release of New Patriotic Party Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, members of the Minority were present in Parliament today, Friday, May 30, 2025.
Their unexpected return follows a dramatic walkout on Thursday and a protest at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), where Wontumi is being held over allegations of fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.
Speaking to the press, Member of Parliament for Akuapem North Constituency in the Eastern Region, Mr. Sammy Awuku, acknowledged the Minority’s return and said their next course of action would be revealed on the floor of the House.
“The Minority has made a return to Parliament today, and what we plan to do next will be seen in today’s proceedings,” he stated.
Chairman Wontumi’s arrest and the GH¢50 million bail condition imposed on him have sparked tensions within the party, with some MPs accusing EOCO of political persecution.
However, the Deputy Attorney-General has since clarified that the case involves serious criminal investigations with both local and international dimensions.
All eyes remain on Parliament as political watchers anticipate the Minority’s next move in the unfolding drama.
