NDC slightly ahead in tight Akwatia by-election race – Polls

The poll, conducted between August 27 and 28 among 2,050 voters, projects the NDC’s candidate, Bernard Bediako, with 53 per cent of the vote, compared to 47 per cent for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Solomon K. Asumadu.
The by-election, scheduled for September 2, follows the death of NPP MP Ernest Kumi on July 7. Analysts say the contest is shaping up to be one of the fiercest by-elections in recent memory.
Akwatia’s reputation as a swing constituency adds weight to the poll’s findings.
For more than two decades, the seat has alternated between the NPP and the NDC, making this race a potential bellwether for the 2028 general elections.
Beyond traditional party allegiances, the survey points to high voter dissatisfaction over unemployment, economic hardship, and poor social amenities as dominant campaign issues influencing voter behaviour.
However, pollsters warn that undecided voters remain a decisive factor.
Their choices could either solidify Bediako’s lead or hand Asumadu a late comeback.
Meanwhile, security agencies say they will deploy heavily in Akwatia to ensure peace on election day, mindful of violent clashes that have marred previous by-elections.
