Speaker Bagbin tenders unqualified apology to Judiciary over MPs' conduct during Chief Justice vetting
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has issued an unqualified apology to the Judiciary following the conduct and remarks made by some Members of Parliament during Monday's Appointments Committee hearing.
The hearing was convened to vet Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie for the position of Chief Justice, but certain comments from MPs sparked criticism for being inappropriate and disrespectful toward the judicial arm of government.
Addressing the House on Tuesday, Speaker Bagbin expressed deep regret over the incident and reaffirmed Parliament's commitment to maintaining mutual respect between the two arms of government.
“I wish to render an unqualified apology to the Judiciary for the nature of words and conduct displayed by some Members during the vetting.
Parliament holds the Judiciary in the highest regard,” the Speaker stated.
Citing Standing Order 123(3), which prohibits members from imputing improper motives to others, Speaker Bagbin emphasised the importance of upholding decorum and respect during parliamentary proceedings.
He concluded by assuring the House and the public that measures will be implemented to preserve the integrity and cordial relationship between Parliament and the Judiciary.
