Speaker presents Democracy Cup to President ahead of Friday’s clash

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has presented the maiden Democracy Cup to President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House, ahead of the much-anticipated football event.
Explaining the purpose of the initiative, Mr. Bagbin said the Democracy Cup seeks to promote peace, unity, and shared responsibility in strengthening Ghana’s democratic journey.
He emphasised that the event goes beyond football, as it is designed to bring Parliament closer to the people, deepen trust in state institutions, and rekindle faith in democratic governance.
The Democracy Cup match is scheduled for Friday, September 5, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
The curtain-raiser will feature a novelty clash between Parliament and the Judiciary, before the main encounter between Accra Great Olympics and Accra Hearts of Oak.
President Mahama welcomed the initiative, expressing delight at its potential to reinforce Ghana’s democratic values.
He noted that democracy flourishes when state institutions operate with transparency and accountability, stressing that it is not a one-time event but a continuous process to be nurtured and safeguarded for future generations.
The Democracy Cup is expected to become an annual platform for fostering national unity and celebrating Ghana’s democratic progress.
