Ghana, Benin and The Gambia in 'free mobile roaming service' talks – Bawumia
The Ghana government, led by the National Communications Authority, is talking to The Gambia and Benin about giving their people free roaming on mobile phones.
This means Ghanaian travelers, like business people, tourists, and traders, will not have to pay extra for using data or making calls in these countries.
Vice President Dr. Mahmud Bawumia talked about this at a special event celebrating the arrival of a new phone company called Telecel in Ghana.
He said this idea could help businesses between the countries.
The plan is part of a bigger effort by ECOWAS to make it easier for people to communicate across West Africa.
The Vice President also said Ghana already agreed with Togo to have free roaming, and they are working on similar deals with Benin and The Gambia.
“Government has been able to reach an agreement with neighboring Togo to roll out free roaming services on all networks in both countries. And, at the moment, the National Communications Authority is in the process of signing a similar agreement with Benin and The Gambia so citizens can connect easily when they are in each other’s territory”, he stated.
At the event, the Vice President asked the new phone company, Telecel, to make sure their services are good and cheap, because some people still have problems with phone calls.
The CEO of Telecel Ghana, Patricia Obo-Nai, promised to invest a lot in digital services, like online banking and internet, to make them better.
This event was a chance for Telecel to talk to people in the industry and the government about their plans.
Even though Vodafone is not in Ghana anymore, the government still owns part of Telecel Ghana.
