UDS makes history as first African team to win FISU World University Football Championship

The University for Development Studies (UDS) etched its name into sporting history on Sunday in Dalian, China, after defeating defending champions Paulista University of Brazil 2-1 to claim the FISU World University Football Championship.
The victory makes UDS the first African university ever to win the prestigious global title.
The final began with early drama as the Brazilians struck first, forcing the Ghanaian side to chase the game.
Undeterred, UDS displayed remarkable resilience and tactical discipline, keeping their composure against one of the tournament’s most formidable opponents.
Their persistence paid off in the second half when they levelled the score, pushing the contest into extra time.
The first period saw both teams adopt a cautious approach, wary of conceding a decisive blow.
But in the dying minutes of the second half of extra time, UDS delivered the match-winning moment.
A perfectly executed corner kick was converted, sealing the historic triumph and igniting jubilant celebrations among players, coaches, and supporters alike.
The win also highlighted the tactical brilliance of the UDS coaching staff, who devised a strategy that successfully neutralised Paulista’s fluid attacking style.
Notably, the two sides had met earlier in the group stage, sharing a 1-1 draw, but this time the Ghanaians proved superior when it mattered most.
More than just a football victory, the achievement carries historic weight.
Never before had an African university lifted the world university football crown.
With this feat, UDS has not only brought pride to Ghana but also established Africa as a rising force on the global student football stage.
