Farmers’ bank: A lifeline for Ghana’s agricultural sector and growth-Sosu
The government needs to establish a specialised bank to support farmers, Eric Sosu, Director of Operations for Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF), says the current Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) is not meeting the needs of farmers.
According to him, there is a need for the government to establish a farmers’ bank to support farmers because the ADB is not functioning as intended.
Mr Sosu stated, “Farmers and fishermen need accessible and affordable financial services to boost productivity and growth.
Mr Sosu’s plea highlights the challenges faced by Ghana’s agricultural sector, including limited access to credit and financial services.
He made this call while speaking on Oman Ghana Nkosuo morning show hosted by Yaa Titi on Accra-based CTV on Monday, December 8, 2025.
He argues that a dedicated farmer’s bank could provide the much-needed lifeline, enabling farmers to invest in their businesses and improve food security.
According to Sosu, he says last year there was an amount of 20 million US dollars which was meant to be delivered to the small-scale farmers, but the money was not given to them, and up till now he doesn’t know where the money has been kept. He clearly stated that the ADB is not serving its purpose well, so this calls for a new farmers’ bank in order to support farmers, small-scale farmers and also fishermen.
He said the work of the fishermen is dangerous, therefore they also need to be supported, mentioning the amount of the outboard motor they use now, which costs about 15 thousand Ghana Cedi.
Since the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) is not serving its purpose, the government needs to establish a farmers’ bank, Sosu stated.
