GOLDBOD generated over GH¢900 million in 2025 - PRO discloses
The Media Relations Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD), Prince Kwame Minkah has defended the operations of the State gold trading institution, urging Ghanaians to support its mandate rather than allow political debates and misinformation to undermine its work.
In an opinion article, Mr Minkah argued that GOLDBOD has delivered significant economic benefits since its establishment, insisting that claims suggesting the institution has suffered financial losses are not supported by available evidence.
According to him, GOLDBOD generated more than GH¢960 million in revenue in 2025 while keeping expenditure below GH¢120 million, resulting in a projected surplus of between GH¢700 million and GH¢800 million.
He further stated that the institution has played a crucial role in formalising Ghana’s gold trade and reducing gold smuggling by purchasing gold at competitive prices, a strategy, he said, has helped retain more foreign exchange within the country.
Mr Minkah noted that GOLDBOD exceeded its 2025 export target by shipping 104 tonnes of artisanal and small-scale gold, generating more than US$10 billion in foreign exchange earnings.
He added that the artisanal and small-scale mining sector recorded US$10.8 billion in export earnings during the year, surpassing the US$2.4 billion generated by the large-scale mining sector.
He maintained that these gains have contributed to improving Ghana’s foreign exchange position and strengthening the cedi.
“GoldBod does not belong to any political party. It belongs to the Republic of Ghana. Its success is not the success of one government or one administration. It is the success of every Ghanaian,” Mr. Minkah stated.
The GOLDBOD spokesperson also called for constructive criticism of the institution, stressing that public accountability remains important but should be based on facts and guided by the national interest.
He concluded by urging Ghanaians to support reforms aimed at formalising the country’s gold industry, protecting national resources and promoting long-term economic prosperity.
