Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem has said the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) is helping to curb gold smuggling while increasing foreign exchange earnings for the country.

According to him, GOLDBOD purchased 135.8 metric tonnes of gold between January 2025 and May 2026, with the bulk of the purchases coming from the artisanal and small-scale mining sector.

Mr Ampem disclosed that GOLDBOD spent approximately US$16.1 billion on gold purchases during the period, including US$9.8 billion in 2025 alone.

He stated that GOLDBOD exported 104 metric tonnes of gold in 2025, generating more than US$10 billion in revenue.

According to the Deputy Finance Minister, the exports contributed to the appreciation and stability of the Ghana cedi.

Mr Ampem further indicated that the government is implementing targeted policies to ensure that gold purchases translate into tangible benefits for the country.

He said efforts are being made to ensure that Ghana derives maximum value from its gold resources through improved retention and management of proceeds from the sector.

According to him, the capture of gold within the formal economy should strengthen Ghana's balance sheet, increase reserves and enhance the country's economic sovereignty.
